Day 1 – The Greatest Wall of All

Today was our first full day in China! I woke up bright and early at 6am (which would never happen back home). At 7:30 we went down to breakfast and it was really good. Then we all met in the conference for an overview of our entire stay in China. After that we went to the famous Great Wall of China. I didn’t realize how many stairs would be involved in the hike up the mountain to the Great Wall. According to my phone, we walked up about 75 flights of stairs. The stairs were never-ending and I had to take a lot of breaks. It was a struggle but so worth the amazing view. Pretty sure I couldn’t walk 10 feet without taking a picture. It felt surreal and majestic at the same time. We only walked from Tower 9 to Tower 6. It was cool to see the cannons from such an ancient time. It is crazy to me how long the wall was and how strong it has held up for centuries. After walking on the wall for a bit, we took a toboggan down to the bottom of the mountain. You could control how fast you went and it was so fun that I couldn’t stop smiling. Not sure how safe it was but it was overall incredible that I did not care. We all fell asleep on the bus home and got dinner shortly after. Most of us went to Hot Pot in the mall near our hotel. It had an unbelievable amount of food. Just when I thought dinner was over, the waiter came over with more food. I had some beef, bread, rice, and tried bamboo for the first time.
