Final Reflection: 最終反思

Looking back at my brief two weeks in China I can honestly say that it was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I am so honored and privileged to have been given the opportunity to participate in such an amazing program like Plus3 as well as receive funds from the Thomas Angelo Honors Scholarship. This award significantly aided in my ability to be able to participate in the wonderful program that is Plus3 China. The award also allowed me to pursue and accomplish my goal of becoming a more well-rounded and culturally aware citizen and business student.

My time abroad far exceeded all expectations I had going in. When I arrived at Pitt I never thought I would be able to have the opportunity to study abroad as I was nervous and frightened by what obstacles may be presented during my time away from Pitt. However, with the help of Pitt Business and my amazing advisor Mr. McDermott I started to see the amazing benefits of exploring not only the cultural aspects of different countries, but also the business differences in the Plus3 program. After completing Plus3 I can with 100% confidence say that I feel as if I have made a great step forward in accomplishing my goal of becoming a more well-rounded, culturally aware, and globally minded business student. Throughout my time in China I was able to interact face to face with huge global companies such as Xiaomi and Delphi while also getting the opportunity to ask questions to some of the company’s top-level executives. I not only learned aspects of business that differ between the United States and China, but also how some of the most successful business people got to where they are today. The ability to learn and network with these individuals was truly remarkable. Additionally, my ability to explore and interact with students at some of China’s top universities allowed for me to not only get a better understanding of how a typical Chinese college student lives, but also to gain a greater appreciation of Chinese culture. I believe this was one of the most amazing things I was able to experience throughout my time on Plus3 China: understanding and appreciating the cultural differences in today’s world. There is so much that I experienced in my two weeks in China that was different than what I was accustomed to in the United States whether it was how the Chinese reacted to their president removing the term limit, how aggressive some selling techniques were in stores, or how much emphasis was put on family and respect. All of this, whether I liked the certain difference or not, allowed for me to become a more globally minded and culturally accepting individual; I believe this is one of the most important things I was able to experience during my time abroad as I believe we live in a world today where we punish and ridicule each other for our differences rather than accept and appreciate them.

Looking ahead at my future in Pitt Business I am excited to continue to pursue major in Finance or Accounting as well as minor in Economics. Additionally, I am excited to continue my involvement with the Pitt’s Sports Business Association as Executive Vice President in order to help provide students like myself who are interested in pursuing careers in the sports industry with professional experiences and lasting mentorship. I am also looking forward to planning, once again, to study abroad so that I can continue to become a more global minded and culturally aware business student. Lastly, I would like to thank Pitt Business and the Thomas Angelo Honors Scholarship fund once again for all their help and support in making my time abroad with Plus3 China so successful.
