Going Away With Milo DeFay

Greetings, my name is Milo DeFay. I’m currently a freshman in the University of Pittsburgh College of Business and Administration, and I plan on majoring in Marketing and Global Management. I was born in Duncansville, PA, which is located just two hours east of campus. On campus this year, I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and learning something new within all my classes. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania,  I always enjoyed the staying active, exploring the outdoors with my two older brothers, and traveling to many different places.

My favorite part about traveling is its ability to truly change the way you perceive the world. When you travel to another another country or even another state, the experience of immersing yourself into another culture is like nothing else.  By being immersed into another climate you gain a sense of respect and knowledge for people, and their traditions by simply stepping into their shoes for a period of time. You can read all you want in a book but nothing compares to first hand experiences.

I’ve chosen to go on the Plus3 Argentina trip which focuses on Healthcare Management in Argentina.  As both of my parents practice in the medical field, I grew up listening to discussion about the benefits and drawback of medical care. Through this program I would have the opportunity of exposure to the business aspects of healthcare. This program offers first hand knowledge of the impact of globalization on healthcare, an interesting program concept as it juxtaposes health and business. As a potential Global Management major, I’m intrigued by how healthcare is managed in other countries and this program offers experience specifically in that field.

I hope to gain new knowledge on healthcare management in another country, and specifically how the impact of healthcare affects communities in Argentina. As well as gaining knowledge on how healthcare is managed in another country, Argentina is a Spanish speaking country, and this would give me the opportunity to further develop my global perspective and Spanish speaking skills. In country I believe I can acquire a new respect for the Argentine culture, traditions, and  people, as I walk through the streets of Buenos Aires during site visits and cultural immersion trips throughout my program. I have never been to Argentina, but have heard many wonderful things through native Argentines who taught my spanish classes throughout high school, so this experience is one I’m truly looking forward to. With this trip under my belt, I hope to utilize its first hand experience in the future during my professional life to explain how it has helped me become a citizen of the world.

I’m stoked for my trip to begin and can’t wait to gain a new travel experience while learning about Argentina’s healthcare system. I have a long trip ahead of me and I haven’t even thought about packing yet. So farewell for now, and I hope you stay tuned in to my blog as I update you on my experience throughout my program. ¡Adios!
