A Barista in Costa Rica!

Hello everyone! My name is Abby Coffman and I’m interested in studying Marketing and Supply Chain with a certificate in Digital Media. At home I work as a barista for a local coffee shop, so I’m super excited to travel to Costa Rica and learn about the coffee and banana industry (feel free to check us out on insta! @plumislandcoffeeroasters).

Something that really intrigues me about traveling to Costa Rica is the fact that it is one of the world’s leading nations for ecological sustainability. Costa Rica focuses on having green energy that is achieved by geothermal power, hydropower, solar power and wind power. Due to these efforts, Costa Rica’s electricity is largely carbon neutral and it is their goal to soon be fully carbon neutral within the next few years. Using all of these renewable energy sources reduces pollution immensely and sustains the clean and natural environment of the country. Because of the Ticos’ efforts toward using renewable energy sources, I have a lot of respect for Costa Rica and I believe that other countries around the world should follow the steps of the Ticos in saving our planet.

In addition to Costa Rica’s environmental sustainability, the ecotourism industry works hard to promote interactions with local communities and small businesses to achieve a sense of harmony among the Ticos. More specifically, the CST (Certification for Sustainable Tourism) focuses on improving environmental and social practices in order to bring in more tourists and maintain the eco friendly vibe.

Overall, Costa Rica’s amazing natural beauty is sustained because of the caring and hardworking Ticos. Their attitude and drive serves as a role model to other countries moving toward a greener environment and I find this very inspirational. I cannot wait to be in Costa Rica in just a few days and experience this incredible culture first hand!
