We made it! After only one full day here in Heredia, I have learned so much about Costa Rica and the wonderful people that live here. Even at 11 pm last night, my host family had a full dinner prepared for my roommate and me. Walking through downtown Heredia today, many locals welcomed us to Costa Rica. The kindness and hospitality of the people here is astounding.
The one thing that I did not expect about Heredia was its size. I know that it’s the capital city of the province of Heredia, but always thought it would be much smaller. For a city so large, it’s also very quiet and peaceful in my neighborhood.
I have studied Spanish for five years now, but was expecting difficulty in communicating with my host family and other Ticos. So far, I haven’t struggled as much as I thought I would! My host family is very understanding, patient, and generally understands what I mean, even if I forget a word.
I’m really excited to see what the rest of our Costa Rican adventure brings, especially now that I am a bit more familiar with the culture and lifestyle and have more realistic expectations. ¡Hasta Mañana!
