What kind of chicken hatches a Glass Egg?

Today, we went back to UEF for a lesson on the history of Ho Chi Minh city and how it has been and is continuing to expand exponentially since the 1970’s. The focus of this trip is globalization, and I feel as though this morning’s presentation encompasses this idea. The plot of land that Ho Chi Minh city was built on, was once an area that was used for guerrilla warfare in the Vietnam War, and thanks to investors from other countries and local people inspired to enhance the style of living in the area, it has been completely changed and is now rapidly modernizing. After the presentation we moved on to another language lesson, which to no surprise was just as difficult as the other days. Due to Vietnamese being the most tonal language, it is very difficult to learn and distinguish pronunciation when first learning it. After our time at the school, we moved on to lunch. Today we ate at one of the world’s most famous eating establishments, McDonalds. However, this McDonalds had three stories and it felt good to eat some food that was familiar to me. Next, we went on to our second business tour of the trip, Glass Egg Digital Media. Glass Egg Digital Media is a video game graphics outsourcing company. Their revenue comes from designing graphics for video game companies and selling them their work to use in the games that are sold. One cool part about today’s tour was that I have played a couple of games that they design for and can say first hand that they do very well at their job. During the visit we walked around the building and were shown some of the compensations that the workers get to enjoy such as a nap room and a video game room for those who finish their work early. We listened to a presentation by the company’s COO who has worked closely with upper level management for companies such as Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft. He was very experienced and was and had a rapid answer to all the questions we had asked. The most interesting point he made was about the benefits of working in Vietnam compared to the other places in the world that may be more ideal geographically. Many competitors in China have problems with employees leaving in groups and either joining other competitors or starting up their own design business on their own. There is a lot less competition in Vietnam, and due to this, employees have low incentive to leave. Also, out of the company’s roughly 500 employees, only 5 are not Vietnamese which shows that they love doing business in the country and providing opportunities for the citizens as well. Overall, Glass Egg Digital Media opened my eyes to this whole industry and showed me how advanced technology and companies are in Vietnam. All I’m saying is if Glass Egg needs an accountant someday, I would be very happy to help them out.
