Operation: Seoul Views (May 8)

Another early start to the day at 6:00am. By 7:00 we were on the bus heading to Samsung Biologics, a sub company of Samsung focused on the creation of bio drugs. This company was fascinating to me. While they have only existed for a few years, they have already shot up to be one of the largest companies in the industry. We then got to tour some of the facilities. They have these massive reservoirs where they let the drugs ferment for days in order to meet the patients required product.

After the company visit, we got a tour of Seoul city hall. This area is cool because they just finished their new city hall in 2012, but also kept the old building from 1929 as well. The new building is very modern and curvy, and entirely made of glass. I am a big fan of modern style architecture. The inside of the building also had a whole insulating wall of plants, which also helps keep the air fresh. Our tour guide brought us through the building, and I got to sit in the mayor’s chair in his office.

We then went to another company called Seoul Global Startup Center. They are an incubator company that helps build startup companies for foreigners to Korea. The start ups ranged from fashion companies to innovations in technology. The man who ran the organization lived in Chicago before moving to Korea, and he studied electrical engineering at Purdue University. Small World!

Later that night, me and some friends took a trip to N Seoul Tower. This is a building that overlooks Seoul, since it was built on to of a mountain. The view was amazing. Seoul is a ginormous city, and even though we were at the top, I couldn’t see the city limits in any direction it just went on forever. Great night with great people.
