Today we had to wake up early to get on a bus to go to Limassol, a port city near the southern tip of Cyprus. Unlike yesterday during which we did cultural tours around Nicosia, we came to Limassol to visit a company headquartered there called Medochemie. For those unaware, this company makes generic versions of drugs when their patents expire. We first did a little panel with some of the executives which was about quality assurance (QA), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and the company’s supply chain. They also told us about how their company operates during drug recalls and how the Covid pandemic affected them. It was very enlightening on how the pharmaceutical industry works. (In case you were wondering, we’re going back to Limassol a couple more times according to the itinerary.)
We then went to UNIC’s campus for lunch. Compared to the food in the Eatery at Pitt, it was much better. Because we had so much free time, a group of us went to the Mall of Engomi (the mall mentioned in my post yesterday). Because we had more time than yesterday, we really got to explore the mall more. It was really nice and better than the mall somewhat close to my house back in the US (which is a fairly low bar to clear). It was then time to head back to campus and learn about the Cypriot gaming industry through the company Wargaming, the creator of the game World of Tanks. In this lecture, we learned about how games are turned from an idea to a finished product. As a person who enjoys playing video games, it was very interesting to learn about this process. We then got to ask questions about things in the gaming industry. He then challenged us to come up with a way to solve the problem of too many undeserving games getting greenlit. Overall, the day was very interesting and taught me about industries I did not know that much about.
