I have always known Mircosoft as an innovative and intriguing technology company, but most notably for Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. Prior to today’s visit, my knowledge ended there. Actually, as I’m writing this I received my daily reminder notification (that I always ignore) that my “Microsoft AutoUpdate” is ready for installation, something I never recognized was coming from Microsoft! Although I was aware Microsoft has another services such as electronics, I’ve only ever taken advantage of their applications. My initial impression of the Microsoft headquarters left me in absolute awe. Their cutting-edge technology is reflected within the building’s architecture, and I believe is one of the reasons they remain so productive along with the community-based environment.
As we walked into the meeting room and were told we would be testing a new product, I inched up in my seat, feeling as if we were receiving top secret information. When the product was revealed, this feeling grew even stronger. I have heard of enhanced reality, but today was the first time I got to try it out for myself. As I watched Shreya struggle to “grab the screen,” my anticipation grew, wondering how exactly it looked through the glasses. This futuristic product can enhance learning on many different scales.
I was shocked to learn that most employees at the Microsoft Headquarters are not Irish. In fact, there are separate office spaces for Dutch, Swiss, German, etc. I should have asked where the American office is because I’d love to be a part of it! Everyone at Microsoft seems incredibly intelligent and the workspace makes an area for creativity and inclusion.
Something I’d like to learn from Dr. Kelley is how Ireland compares to other countries in terms of innovative products, such as enhanced reality.
