Ships and Local Towns

Today we had the opportunity of meeting with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) Maritime Training Center. We learned the logistics of training members that work on a cargo ship. We got to see the simulation they set up of a ship’s engine control room. As well as their real-life simulation of driving the ship on the ocean. We saw some of the problems trainees must go through during their engine room simulation. BSM stresses the importance of team work on their ships, because if the crew does not talk to each other than something could happen to the ship. While there we got to see a real team of students practicing on the simulation. From a separate control room, BSM can change various ship factors that the students must go through. Such as the weather, the time of day, and how many other ships are in the water. It was interesting to see how much work goes into training members to be out at sea as well as maintaining the ship while out at sea.

Next, we went to the Omodos Village and had lunch at Stou Kir Yianni Tavern. Omodos village is a small village in the mountains with small shops and restaurants. At lunch we had chicken Kabobs, roasted pork, traditional Cyprus pasta with mushrooms, and roasted potatoes. Trying the traditional Cyprian foods was very exciting. Lastly, we visited Troodos Square. Troodos Square is a little village further up in the mountains past Omodos Village with hiking trails, overlooks, shops, and restaurants. In one of the shops, we tried Turkish Delights. They are a chewy, sweet candy covered in powdered sugar. They were very good and a lot different compared to candy in the United States. It was very exciting seeing the small local towns outside of the main cities.
