This morning, we started our day by traveling to the coast of Cyprus to the city of Limassol. We arrived at the BSM (Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement) Maritime Training Center by 9:30 am. This center trains students who are interested in becoming qualified to navigate and steer ships holding cargo, containers, etc. We learned that the students have to be ready for all scenarios, and presenters focused on teaching us about the transportation of LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) by tanker.
The need to distribute natural gas has increased over the past few years, especially in the Americas. The process of LNG distribution is important for countries that do not have the access to natural gas reserves therefore the efficient transfer of LNG by ship is very important in maintaining the supply chain of energy sources. We were informed that the environmental contributions of using natural gas and efficiency of LNG transportation makes this a more favorable energy source. The head presenters expressed that the operation of transporting LNG by ship is very complicated and dangerous. A stable design and numerous safety measures have to be utilized when handling this liquidized form of natural gas. Specific membranes encase the LNG and prevent damage and accidents from occurring and there are very detailing and complex protocols when transporting these tankers. Each group made rotations through each room and were told about topics like how students train, safety measures and equipment on the ships, the engine room, how meals are prepared, and the difference between starboard and port sides.
After we finished up at the Maritime Training Center we started our trek up to the mountainous region of Cyprus. We first stopped at the Omodos Village and ate a large and delicious cyprian meal before walking around the village. Once we finished, we began to wander around. I found it very surprising that while this town is far away from major cities and secluded most of the stores we encountered were very much tailored for tourists. It was interesting to see how this town is based off of the many tourists that come through that buy food, clothing, and knick-knacks. In addition, to exploring the streets I also went to visit the monastery. The building was stunning, and I admired the intricacy inside the building. I have not seen a religious building as structurally unique in the US, so it was great to be able to experience that.
Lastly, we made our way further up the mountains to Trodos square where we were able to see a beautiful view and walk for a bit on a trail. Overall, I loved being able to see so many different sides to Cyprus today.
