We spent today in Munich touring the city and learning about its history. We visited the new town hall first and got to see the statues at the center of the building move as they played music that rang through the square. We were all amazed that something so old was still functioning so beautifully after repeated use over the year.
Munich is definitely louder than Augsburg and has more people. It feels more like a city that you would see in America. It was a melting pot of many cultures and peoples. This could be seen in all of the different foods and restaurants that we had to pick from to go to lunch. We took a tour around the city and saw many historical buildings and monuments, each originally built way before the United States was even formed. The history of the city was unfiltered and honest when given by the tour guide, especially the information about World War II. Despite being a city, all of the buildings were relatively short and there were no skyscrapers. It is because of this that Munich still feels old fashioned despite being so large and populous.
We ended the tour in the middle of a beautiful market that was selling all kinds of foods and fresh produce. We then went shopping around Munich at various stores, bakeries, and souvenir shops. I bought some clothes and a glass stein to bring back with me. We also stopped for bubble tea and purchased some macrons at a French bakery. We then headed to dinner and on the way we stopped at the Alter Botanischer Garten that had a beautiful fountain in the middle. Many people were laying in the grass or sitting by the fountain with their feet in the water. I was amazed to find a place of such green and tranquility in the middle of the city. We then headed off to dinner where we ate the German version of American burgers. After dinner, we went back to Augsburg via train, but got stuck halfway there due to police activity blocking the way to Augsburg. We did make it to the hotel eventually though!
