The effectiveness of Costa Rica’s many measures to implement sustainable practices in its industries is proven by its ranking in the top 20 of the World Energy Council’s global “environmental sustainability” ranking. Costa Rica’s progressive, environmentally friendly policies have helped the country grow healthier and have strengthened industries, setting Costa Rica ahead of other nations. I personally support this focus on sustainability and give the nation props for investing in itself and supporting its sustainable future.
After rapid deforestation beginning in the 1940s, government officials recognized the need for change. In the early 1990s, several policies were put in place to protect Costa Rica’s natural resources. These policies have helped make Costa Rica one of the only nations on the planet to reverse deforestation and stop biodiversity loss while actually increasing economic growth. Having the highest deforestation rate in the world in the early 90s makes this accomplishment much more impressive.
Costa Rica has no plans to stop its focus on sustainability. In fact, the National Strategic Plan of 2020-2050 supports long-term sustainability. This plan aims to decarbonize the economy strengthen the resiliency of the ecosystem. The plan also invests in R&D related to sustainability and sustainable practices.
I am super excited to get to Costa Rica and see firsthand how these progressive policies impact the country and its culture. I can’t wait to be invested in the culture and study the industries that reach all the way to the US.
