After a very long flight we finally got to Germany this morning around 7 am. We left the airport and drove to Augsburg. On the bus ride to Augsburg, you could immediately see how different Germany is compared to the US. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful yellow flower field everywhere. The yellow coloring is so bright that it almost makes the flowers look fake. Also on the bus ride, we drove on the Autobahn a highway in Germany. Parts of the autobahn have no speed limits, so for an American this was very different. Not only are cars flying past our bus, but also all the cars on the road have a mutual respect for each other and get over for faster cars.
Another thing that we did today was tour Augsburg a little. Before we came, I thought that Augsburg was an old city but had become modernized after the war. I was wrong, the city is beautiful and older. A lot of streets are for walking traffic only, and some streets/paths are cobblestone. This very different from my home of Columbus which is definitely a modern city. My favorite part about the city so far are the old canals. They are so different and unique to the city, but it makes the city feels very old. You can easily picture what it would’ve been like to live here 200 years ago.
To end the day, we toured the fuggeri which is the first public housing created by Fugger. It was really cool to see that it was made 500 years ago, and people are still living there. The last thing we did at the fuggeri was go into their World War two bomb bunkers. That was really weird because people had hid here during the war to survive bombing. In Europe bomb shelters from World War two are normal but they really don’t exist in the US. It was very interesting to see them, and after wards I got to try some real German spätzle.
