It’s Raining Clogs

Today was, to say the least, a very wet and eventful day. We started the morning off strong by not getting on the bus to then get on the next bus which was very crowded. After, we sprinted to the train that we had barely made. At Zaanse Schans, we walked around and saw windmills and the surrounding landscapes. First, we went to see how the wooden clogs were created. I had to get a mini pair to take home. I found it very interesting how it only takes five minutes to make them, but about two hours by hand. Next, we went to an area where they showed us how they make cheese. I didn’t know that different cheese types take longer to make and require different processes to do. In the gift shop, we tried many different types of cheese, such as non-pasteurized cheese, which we do not have in the US, truffle cheese, and beer cheese, and my favorite kind was the smoked goat cheese. Our final destination was the windmills, where we could go inside and see how they cut wood with the windmills. Our tour guide Flippe told us about how even though it is free entry, they attract revenue through all of the gift shops. Which made a lot of sense after we all bought many wheels of cheese and mini clogs at the stores. I found the machinery in the windmills very fascinating, and it seemed like a very efficient way to cut wood. We tried a Dutch pancake for lunch, and it was very, very good. I definitely would recommend it to someone coming to the Netherlands. I can’t wait for the tulip fields tomorrow. Hopefully, it’s not as rainy! Because, to say the least, it rained the whole and didn’t stop any of the bikers from still riding their bikes. Maybe they should invent a bike with an umbrella on it!
