Today we traveled to Rotterdam. While the Netherlands isn’t a large country, this turned into quite the process. We took the metro into the city center, and then boarded a high speed train. Unfortunately the train was canceled because someone had been hit by a different train on the tracks up ahead. So, we had to get off the train and board a different one. This delay caused a change in the itinerary, but nothing too detrimental. After a quick lunch, we traveled to the floating farm.
The farm represents an innovative idea that allows cities easy access to livestock. The customers of the company are similar to a normal farm, but the floating farm has a stronger connection to the city, as they are so close at hand. However, the suppliers of the floating farm are more unique. Companies from the city will donate their extra grass, bread, and more to the farm, which they will use to feed the livestock. One of these donors is the local soccer club, Feyenoord, who gives excess grass. This creates somewhat of a circular supply chain, where the same people who are supplying the farm, could also be consuming its products. This certainly bolsters the farm’s relationship with local businesses.
The concept of a floating farm is an interesting, and generally recent one. I talked to Minke, the farm employee, and she said that whilst there have been roadblocks along the way, the farm has turned out to be more successful than they anticipated. They are even planning an expansion, as their demand has risen greatly. The creation of more floating farms across the world could be in the near future, but places that experience tropical storms could not hold farms, which limits the regions in which they can be built. Overall, seeing a unique company like the floating farm was a very educational and beneficial experience.
After the farm we were given a bit of free time to explore, before taking a harbor cruise of Rotterdam. The cruise gave great views of the city, and really exemplified the difference between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Rotterdam is far more innovative and modern, whilst Amsterdam is more historic. Both cities have their perks, and I’m glad we got to visit each. Dinner tonight was fantastic, a great comeback from last night. At a local Turkish restaurant we were spoiled with kebabs, fries, and more. It was a stomach filler to say the least. Tonight we are free to explore Rotterdam, so I’m looking forward to checking out a new area!
