Today we learned about the life of Tico Farmers at Life Monteverde. It was interesting to actually walk through the coffee plantation and see the different aspects of it. They farm sustainably to the best of their abilities and bring joy to tourists by giving them tours educating them on their farming abilities.
However they face challenges with the dry season and the lack of rain that brings. Without rain, the vegetables and fruits they are growing are not getting the correct amount of resources they need. To fix this, they built greenhouses outside with controlled water systems. We learned that they turn the soil for the coffee plants. Since it takes 3 years harvest coffee beans, they plant other crops in order to keep their source of income continuous and have financial success when waiting for the coffee beans. To create a sustainable farm they emphasize the importance of decomposition in the natural process rather than having people artificially create it and put it in the ground.
If I was a Tico farmer I would want to educate tourists on how they keep their farms sustainable. Being a part of a community means being in a group of people having particular characteristics in common. Everyone works together to ensure the advancement of their community. We all got to help out painting a school today and became a part of their community today. It was eye opening to see how grateful they were and I loved that I was able to be a part of something that would make the kids who go to school there happy.
