On Wednesday we headed to Vassiliko Port & Vassiliko Cement Works where we had an informational session like usual at any place we go to. I was really interested in the process and I learned a lot. The full cycle goes like this… quarrying, crushing, pre-blending, grinding, pre-heating, clinker production, clinker storage, cement grinding, and then cement storage. There is a lot that goes into the production of cement, the active ingredient in concrete. During the production, 8-10 tons of fossil fuels per hour are released into the air. During the transportation of the cement, it is loaded onto a conveyor belt and due to gravity, 400 tons/hour are transported onto a ship. No emissions are released during this process because it is due to gravity. They are trying to control emissions and lower them in the future. After our information session, they took us on a tour, which we needed to wear a safety vest and a hard hat for. The production area was massive and we barely saw any of it, due to it’s size.
After Vassiliko Port & Vassiliko Cement Works we headed to Zygi for fish mezze. It was interesting to say the least. We were served endless amounts of fish and various types of seafood. I tried everything but I didn’t necessarily love it. It was an experience so it’s okay. We walked around the town but there wasn’t much there, just a lot of restaurants.
After lunch we headed to MSC Shipmanagement Limassol. This was the most spirited tour by far we have been on. The group was the most diverse as well which was cool because most companies are employed by people from Cyprus. We got the chance to see the software they use to track all of their ships, as well as other people’s ships. You can see the distance from other ships and all of the parameters regarding the ship like the speed and location.
