Today was an adventure! We started our day with a trip to Vassiliko Cement Company. Vassiliko is a cement company that was founded in 1963. Vassiliko is the largest producer of concrete in Cyprus and is also home to the only industrial port in Cyprus as well. This port is huge to their company as they can quickly import and export right from their factory, limiting the actions and cost of sending it else where. Before getting to see the port, we were given a bright Vassiliko vest, along with a hard hat to start our port tour. They also have a large conveyor belt that runs from the factories all the way to the port. Vassiliko also has invested heavily into new equipment that limits the amount of dust that is released from the atmosphere.
After checking out the port, we were taken to their overwatch room, where we got to see all of the technicians at work. We got a glimpse of the oversight of all major steps in the the making of cement. This was really cool as everything was so complex and looked very overwhelming, but the technicians knew what they were doing.
Following the conclusion of our tour at Vassiliko, we had a very diverse array of seafood by the ocean. I can say it was a different taste and I definitely tried some new foods. After eating, I took a quick walk around the town and even chased with some locals.
For our last visit, we visited Mediterranean Shipmanagement Company. MSC was a great experience. The environment was so upbeat and the employees really cared about what they do. A topic that really interested me, was the topic of Piracy. Hearing about how these situations were handled really kept me interested in this line of work.
After all the professional presentations and questions wrapped up, MSC brought out a cake and even let me cut it. They fed us pizza and refreshments to wrap everything up, and even just hung around to chat. Overall , I really enjoyed hearing from MSC as I did a pre-departure presentation on them.
