Today we went to Vassiliko Cement Works and MSC Shipmanagement. Vassiliko is close to Limassol, and MSC is located in Limassol, so we only had to spend a little time on the bus today. Vassiliko Cement produces cement and clinker and then distributes it to other companies to be turned into cement. Concrete is, after water, one of the most consumed materials on the planet, and cement is a crucial ingredient in concrete. Due to this, Vassilikho Cement Works, production can handle millions of tins of clinker and cement production. To increase their efficiencies, Vassilko Cement Works is next to Vassiliko port. Vassiliko Port is only an industrial port. It predominantly exports clinker and cement from Vassiliko Cement Works and other items. Most imports from Vassiliko port are raw materials for clinker and cement production. Vassilhko Cement has invested in increasing its efficiency in transporting its product. They have two pieces of specific equipment to help speed up the loading process, each costing hundreds of thousands of euros. However, they say the increased efficiencies of the loading method make the investment well worth it.
After Vassiliko Cement Works and the Vassiliko Port we went to MSC Shipmanagement. MSc ship management manages around five hundred ships from the Cyprian office and even more in other offices worldwide. Combining all of its offices around the world, MSC is the largest ship management company in the world. Since they are the largest in the world, they have a lot of capital. They use this capital to invest in refitting their fleet with state-of-the-art technology on their ships to try to reduce carbon emissions. In addition to refitting their ships, they also invest in building and designing new ships. One of the ships MSC owns is the world’s largest container ship, the MSC Irina.
