First Day Out

Today was the first real day in Korea. I slept for almost 12 hours last night, it was very refreshing to finally sleep in a bed. I got breakfast at the hotel around 7:30am and we headed out as a group near 9:00am. Today was mainly just sightseeing. First, we saw the Gyeongbokgung palace and the changing of the royal guards. This was definitely my favorite part of the day. The soldiers were decked out in colorful traditional clothing and were all armed. Additionally, there were some soldiers who had gongs and drums to signify different parts of the changing of the guards. The architecture that these buildings possess is just breathtaking. To make it all better, behind the palace is a giant, beautiful mountain and with the low clouds today the view was stunning. After the Gyeongbokgung palace we ventured to the Blue House, Korea’s version of the White House. Since the Korean presidents do not live here anymore, we were able to go in and get a tour of the place. This was all very fascinating because we were able to be in a house that several Korean presidents lived in while in office. At this time, it was around 12:30pm so, it was time for lunch. Kay, our knowledgeable tour guide showed us the best spot. To no one’s surprise the food was delicious and only cost me 10,000 won ($8). I tried scallion pancakes and mandu for the first time. Later, we went to a Buddhist temple in Jongno-gu. This was especially interesting to me because I have always been intrigued by the Buddhist faith. Seeing the monks perform religious chants was impressive. Finally, we visited a street market. Just about anything you could think of was being sold here. Clothes, jewelry, seafood, pharmaceuticals, spices, fresh fruit, and even winter coats. I purchased a shirt and a Korean watermelon which I ate incorrectly, but it was tasty, nonetheless.
