Business Tours

Today was the first day of touring businesses in Cyprus. We attended 3 local businesses, where we learned about how each provides to their environment, and to life outside the island. There was many different ways I was inspired, first being how I learned that at BSM, it is not only a ship management company, but also provides training to third parties, along with a training school to teach students safety skills, and how to use tools such as drills, power tools etc. I thought this was inspirational how they provide safety and hospitality to those learning how to work for them. At Medochemie, I was inspired when I asked my question about employment satisfaction, and learned how long some employees have been there for, meaning that the company must do a great job at providing for their employees. What inspired me from CSM, was how many outside connections and locations they had, now just in Cyprus, in different countries such as Italy, Greece, and China.

Starting at BSM, from here I learned many different abbreviated codes used throughout the ship management such as imo- international maritime organization, solas- safety of life at sea, and ism code- international safety management code. Going off the ism code, it was said that this code is highlighted throughout its employers, as they must be familiar with it since it ensures the ship is manned with qualified, certified and medically fit seafarers. We then watched their safety videos which ensured the durability of their life jackets, and boats.

At CSM we learned about how the ship workers and the office workers cooperate. In certain circumstances such as needing advice from a business aspect, the captain of a ship can call an expert to receive help. He then mentioned the many different services offered such as finance, technology, energy, leisure and cruise and have examples of each, like e-learning as a way to use technology to teach the upcoming generation, and hospitality and catering allow those who plan to work on ships accommodate to guests.

Finally, after a lunch break to try the greek menu at Mcdonald’s, we arrived to Medochemie. I was very excited since me and my group did our project on this, so I was excited to see how much I knew, and what else I could learn. When asked about losses, it was stated that they had minimal which at first I was expecting and hoping they would say none, but then cleared confusion by saying that all companies in fact have losses, but it is a matter of how low you keep them. I asked personally about the awards that were talked about on our slide show and I was given some more information about how they received so many. Overall, I understand why each company is so popular and I was also very happy to receive 2 new linkedin connections from Medochemie.
