Day 3 ~ Company Visits!

Yassas! We started day 3 in Cyprus with a visit to Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement in Limassol Marina. We sat in a classroom at their training center for about an hour to learn about the company history, what they do, and we had opportunity to ask a Chief engineer any questions we had. I learned that BSM was originally a British Royal Air Force base for rescue boats, and the company is currently building their 5th training center in Ghana! The facility in Cyprus has a gas, engine, and bridge simulator for training. The company uses vertical integration methods of supply chain management, as they own their own travel, hospitality, training, insurance, and IT services. After learning more about the company, we had the opportunity to tour all of the different simulators and facilities at their training center. Seeing the engine room was so cool, I even got to steer a ship with the simulator! I enjoyed getting to learn more about the inner workings of a ship management company, it really helped broaden my understanding of global and international dynamics.

Our next stop of the day was the Columbia Group. This company deals with yacht and cruise management, maritime logistics, energy offshore, but most notably the crewing and training vessels and the ship management. The part of the company that handles the crewing and training vessels and the ship management is called Columbia Ship Managment (CSM). The company established operations in 1978. Their vision is to be the leading international provider of ship management and maritime services. One of the most unique facts I learned about the company is that they provide mental health survives for all employees and crews on the vessels. We got to tour the building and see one of the VR control rooms that the crew uses for training. Learning about the marina industry has been such a cool experience!

Our last company visit of the day was at Medochemie. We started the tour with speaking to the supply chain manager of the company and getting any of our questions answered. Medochemie has 15 manufacturing facilities and transports its product by plane or ship to mainland Europe, and the rest of the world. Their supply chain features strategic, tactical, and operational procedures. They sell to wholesalers and retailers, both in Cyprus and the rest of the world. I learned that the active ingredient in medications is only a small part of the product, the rest is inactive or placebo to help stabilize the product, making it easier to take by the user. I thought this was very interesting since I have never heard that before. As a future bioengineer, having the opportunity to learn about and tour an international medical company was absolutely fascinating! I got to see the main warehouse where they store both the final product and the ingredients. What a great way to end off day 3 in Cyprus. Antio!
