Sustainability and Conservation in Costa Rica

Today we had our earliest wake-up time yet: 5:30! It was well worth it, however, as we got the entire morning to explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. While there, we saw a variety of birds, insects, and other animals. It was amazing to explore such a different climate from what I’m used to, and the views were truly breathtaking.

After our guided tour, we heard from Evelyn Herrera at the Monteverde Institute. We had a very interesting lecture on sustainability and conservation in Costa Rica. I learned a lot about the different practices used. Additionally, I found it very interesting how Costa Rican education differs so much from the United States, as I have never talked about sustainability in any of my classes at Pitt.

Conservation, productivity, and sustainability are super important in Costa Rica. Water is a precious and limited resource facing increasing pressure due to various factors such as population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Despite its abundance of freshwater sources, mismanagement and inefficient use contribute to significant waste. Practices such as outdated irrigation systems in agriculture and inadequate conservation measures further exacerbate water scarcity issues.

Water conservation is critical in Costa Rica due to its crucial role in sustaining ecosystems, supporting agriculture, and ensuring the well-being of its citizens. As a biodiverse hotspot, Costa Rica’s ecosystems rely on water availability to maintain their unique balance. Moreover, agriculture, a significant contributor to the country’s economy, heavily depends on reliable water sources for irrigation. With climate change speeding up water scarcity and variability, conservation measures are essential to mitigate the impacts of droughts and ensure food security. Additionally, promoting water conservation aligns with Costa Rica’s commitment to sustainability, encouraging resilience in the face of growing water challenges.
