Day 4: Business and Baseball

Today, we had an early start but we had a long day ahead of us! We went to Eaton, which is an electrical and power management company.

At Eaton, we had an opportunity to learn about the types of machines and mechanisms they manufacture for their customers. It was really interesting as a marketing major learning about how they select their target market! At their facility, we saw the machines they use to create their products. Overall, this tour was a great introduction to the integration of business and engineering in the professional field.

Since we got to Eaton early, we had some time to spare after the tour. Our tour guide, Kay, took us to the local fish market in the area. The fish market was so elaborate and expansive! There were so many aisles of fresh fish being sold. Our advisor, Dr. Yun, wanted our group to try a unique Korean dish, so he ordered us octopus. The vendor cut the octopus up for us in front of us and we ate it immediately after. The dish was covered in sauce. Actually, I did not partake because I’m vegetarian, but everyone in the group ate it!

After we explored the fish market more, we went to a traditional Korean restaurant for lunch. Since we were eating barbecue, I instead ate bibimbap. The dish was delicious! It consisted of vegetables, a fried egg, and sesame sauce mixed together. The food satisfied my hunger for the day honestly; I could not get enough!

We still had free time after lunch, so we explored the Hyundai Mall next! The mall was quite luxurious. They retailed an array of high end brands. Additionally, there were many nice food and dessert outlets throughout the mall. I had the opportunity to try some tiramisu from Eataly, which is an Italian chain restaurant known for their dessert. It was piquant! Unfortunately, I did not end up buying anything because of the high prices.

Next, I got my energy up for the Kiwoom Heroes vs. the Doosan Bears baseball game. The baseball game started at 6:30, so we had to leave for the game during peak rush hour. Usually, the subway system is pretty calm in Seoul, but we saw a completely different side during rush hour. We were squished up against each other like sardines in the train car! Fortunately, we got the stadium with no bumps along the rail despite the craziness of rush hour.

The stadium was beautiful! You were able to see the mountains against the blue sky at the doors to the entrance. Once the game began, the stadium lit up with chants and cheers! I learned baseball is a huge cultural event for South Koreans. They had many dances and noise makers too. I bought a hat for the Kiwoom heroes!
