Buddhism was a religion I was not very aware and knowledgeable about before today. I have always found religion to be an interesting topic, so learning about Buddhism today was extremely informative. Visiting the pagoda today really gave me a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s religious background. It was very cool seeing first handing Vietnamese individuals praying in the pagoda. I also learned a lot about what Buddhists believe happens to someone after death. Individuals who practice Buddhism basically believe in reincarnation. However, the level of morals an individual holds in this present life ultimately determines what they become in their next life. The pagoda was also so beautiful which made me really appreciate the architecture that went into creating it.
Later in the day we visited the Vietnam War Museum. Walking around the museum and reading everything that went along with pictures presented honestly made me really upset and disappointed. I didn’t know the all the aftermath effects of the war. It really disgusted me to see the Americans usage of Agent Orange that harmed generations of Vietnamese individuals. I think visiting this museum was definitely an eye opener. Obviously, I have learned about this war in high school history class; but, actually seeing the aftermath that this war caused first hand in this museum was extremely tough but also very much needed. I think as an American it can be hard to come visit this museum and to see/admit that our country was in the wrong for a lot of areas in this war. However, I am extremely glad that this museum was a part of our itinerary in this trip and once again it was a huge eye opener.
