Hello everyone! Today was our last day in Birmingham. We visited South and City college. We had a great day and could not wait to head to London. When we get there we got ready and headed to the Alumni dinner. We ate at The Porchester and it was delicious! Tomorrow we well get to see the most beautiful places and things! I cannot wait to see everything and create more amazing memories.
We first met the staff of South and City college. Everyone introduced themselves and told their roles of their position. Everyone was so welcoming and excited to share the knowledge that they know. We learned that there is no age limit to come to this college. In 2022/23 80% of learners progressed with the majority progressing into the next level of study. This statistic is amazing. They offer online assessments while still keeping your skills. If you do not always practice these skills you will loose them. To continue to practice these skills they will maintain fresh.
After speaking to the teachers we began to split into groups. Once we were divided into groups we headed into classrooms. First my group and I went into pluming and english class. The students were learning english while also learning in their major of interest. We all introduced ourselves and were all very impressed with the diversity and unique backgrounds of the students. The next class we went to observe IT and english. The two classes were related by teaching english while also teaching the subject they were in. This is beyond challenging and amazing to see. We were able to speak to some of the students and learn where they are from. Most have just moved within the past year and are just beginning to learn english. After the second observation we went into the conference room to eat lunch. We had all had a good time catching up about the day. After lunch we went into our third classroom to observe. In this class we went into an english class focusing on poetry. We then went into another english class that was mainly focusing on spelling. They were very friendly and welcoming and excited to say hi! After we introduced ourselves they started their spelling test.
After observing classrooms, we then went on a tour around the school. At the tour we seen all of the options of hands on learning. All of the students were in huge rooms filled with equipment. It was all within their intrest and was amazing to see the opportunities they have for students. The options for the students were insane. They were able to learn hands on in many different ways. Another thing that stuck out to me was the amount of resources. They had a variety of different materials to use to work and learn with. They also taught the different levels depending on their skill base. This is key because they will be learning within their skills. The last thing that stuck out to me was the variety of ages. People of all ages were learning to their full potential. We went into the automobile section and there were all different levels working. on cars. I thought it was so cool that they work on staff cars and not just junk yard cars. Two boys in the distance created a spark and we all jumped and screamed!
After the school we rode taxis back to the hotel. We made it inside to get our luggage to be on our way to London! When we made it there, we all gathered our suitcases. We waited for our bus. The traffic was bad so we stood outside for a while. Once the bus finally arrived we loaded up and were on our way! The bus ride was about 3 hours. Most of us slept the entire way, while others only slept a little. We finally arrived in the beautiful London. We walked to our hotel because the bus could not fit through the road. We checked in, ran into our room, and were on our way to the alumni dinner.
At dinner i had a chicken pop pie and mashed potatoes. It was so fresh and delicious! For dinner I got a brownie and ice cream. It was amazing because the brownie was warm and the ice cream was cool. It blended together perfectly and was a great way to end the dinner. I had a great time talking to the alumni. They were very down to Earth and excited to talk about their experiences. With their experiences, they were able to recommend places to go see. I am so excited to spend the day tomorrow in London and see the amazing monuments.
