Samsung, Probiotics, and Getting Lost on the Subway (Day 9)

Surprisingly, my legs did not hurt too much from the hike the day before. Monday morning was an early one because we had two company visits. We were visiting Samsung and Hy. Since we hadn’t had a company visit in a few days I was very eager and excited. I was especially excited for Hy because they are the manufacturers of Yakult! Yakult is a probiotic milk beverage that I had tried before coming to Korea because it is sold in various Asian markets in the United States.

During the Hy company visit we toured the manufacturing plant/center. We were able to see the facility these little yogurt bottles are produced in. There is extensive cleaning and sanitation due to the live bacteria found in the drink. HY also showed us their smart delivery robot. An HY employee drives it and the robot itself has smart features one being temperature control, that optimizes the transportation of the beverages inside. The tour was very interactive with different videos for us to watch and tactile products for us to hold. After the HY tour, we were off to the Samsung Innovation Museum (SIM).

At SIM, we learned about electricity, phones, and televisions. The tour showcased the different products Samsung has released. The first product was sold as early as 1969. The era we live in is a fast-paced one that’s for sure. Examining the different models and products throughout tens of decades is eye-opening of how far our society has come. One of the wall displays was dedicated to the different televisions that Samsung has produced. There were easily over 20 different TVs there. It was humorous because even with all the new flatscreens and upgraded TVs my family had a tube TV up until last year. The tour ended by showcasing some of their newer products being released including different models of phones, smart fridges, and elaborate televisions.

It was only around 4pm when we arrived back at Sejong Hotel. On the bus ride back, Dr. Yun had another scavenger hunt for us all that had us exploring Lotte World. Yun sent 4 pictures to the group leaders, and in turn, each group had to find the location of the picture, take a picture with their group, and send it back to him. My group was only able to find ¾ pictures. WE had given up after we had been looking for over an hour. We ate dinner at Lotte World and then headed back to the hotel after the jam-packed day we had.
