Who I Am and Where I’m Going

Hello everyone!
My name is Janiah Moore, and I’m a rising sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh, studying on the Oakland campus. I’m originally from Connecticut, where I grew up in a close-knit family of four. Many of my relatives work in healthcare, and their dedication has deeply inspired me to pursue a similar path. Back in my hometown, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and worked in a nursing home where my experience truly solidified my passion for nursing. I found genuine joy in building relationships with my residents and being part of their day-to-day care. That hands-on connection confirmed for me that nursing is not just a career, but a calling. Outside of class, you can usually find me hanging out with friends, grabbing food, or just relaxing with a good movie. I’m a big fan of sushi, boba, Italian food, crime shows, and horror movies. On campus, I’m involved in several student organizations, including the Nursing Student Association (NSA) and the Black Students in Nursing Association (BSNA). This summer, after the study abroad trip, I plan to enjoy some road trips and beach days with family and friends, and I’ll also be working as a CNA at my local hospital.

At Pitt, I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a minor in Legal Criminal Justice and a certificate in Global Health. I’ve always known that nursing was the right path for me, not only because of its wide range of specialties, but also because I love supporting others through challenging times. I’m especially interested in exploring how nursing intersects with the legal system and am currently drawn to areas like forensic nursing and legal nurse consulting. As I head into my sophomore year, I’m excited to begin clinicals this fall and gain hands-on experience in different specialties.

Through the PittPlus3 UK program, I’m really looking forward to building connections with fellow students while immersing myself in Birmingham’s culture and daily life. I’m especially curious to see how healthcare and education systems in Birmingham compare to those in Pittsburgh and Connecticut. One area I’m particularly interested in is women’s health, especially how cultural practices—like female genital mutilation (FGM)—influence care and awareness. And of course, I’m also excited for non-academic experiences like trying local food and attending the Mamma Mia musical!

With just a month to go before we depart, I’m counting down the days until we land in Birmingham. I can’t wait to make memories, learn new things, and explore everything this journey has to offer!
