Samantha Sets Off for Spain!

Hello! My name is Samantha Cook and I am a first year student in the Swanson School of Engineering . I am majoring in bioengineering and planning to minor in Chemistry as well as History. After my collegiate career I want to work as a clinical bioengineer and work directly with surgeons and hospitals in the implementation of medical devices into patients. This area of bioengineering is most fascinating to me because I want to be at the forefront of the improvement of the medical field in the country.

Outside of the classroom I am a member of the Pitt Ski and Snowboard club as well as the Biomedical Engineering Society. In my free time I love traveling, music (especially Taylor Swift), hanging out with friends, and am an avid sports fan. Academically I chose engineering as it allows for viable solutions to complex problems for the overall benefit of society. Then the application of engineering to medicine allows for me to hopefully make a drastic change to someones quality of life for the better!

I am thrilled to be going on Plus 3 Spain and visiting Bilbao! I have chosen this specific program because it allows for me to understand my future profession in another setting. I believe it will be beneficial for my academic and professional career to understand the differences between the US healthcare system and the Spanish healthcare system. In this program I hope to learn even more about the production of medical devices improves patients quality of life. I also am excited to explore the Basque region as I have heard absolutely phenomenal reviews about the food and the scenery in this area. I also am very interested in history and am excited to learn so much about the history and unique longevity of the Basque culture in Bilbao!
