Countdown to Ecuador: Carter’s Introduction

Hey everyone! My name is Carter Slocum, and I am from Corry, Pennsylvania. I just finished up my first year at the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration, where I plan to double major in Accounting and Finance, with a certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Professionally, I’m passionate about real estate and anything house-related, so I am especially grateful that Pitt has already given me in-depth knowledge about the business world. On campus, I recently completed a 5-week training program to become a group fitness Zumba instructor for Campus Rec, and in the fall, I’ll be an RA in Bruce Hall, a Living Learning Community for business students.

Outside of college, I enjoy working out, scrapbooking, spending time with friends, and taking care of my many plants. I also enjoy creating content on TikTok, where I have around 14,000 followers. This summer, I am working as a Member Service Representative at a local credit union, and I’m excited to apply what I have learned from college while developing new skills along the way. I’ve always had a passion for travel, which makes participating in Plus 3 even more exciting. Looking forward, I plan to study abroad during my junior year in Sydney, Australia.

With all that said, I am thrilled to announce that I am heading to Ecuador next week! This location was at the top of my list for many reasons, but especially because Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. This Plus 3 location is also exciting because it’s designed to take us across different regions of the country, rather than keeping us in one city. I’ve always dreamed of visiting the Amazon Rainforest, and I am also really looking forward to getting a behind-the-scenes look at the flower and chocolate industries before their products get exported to the United States.

There are several things I hope to gain from this incredible experience! One key mindset emphasized when preparing for Ecuador is being flexible, which is an attitude that I hope to truly embrace. As someone who tends to have a Type A personality, I’m looking forward to stepping outside of my comfort zone, which is something I hope I will bring back with me long after the trip ends. Personally, this will be my first time immersing myself in a completely different culture. I’m hoping it will change my perspective and help me grow in ways I can’t yet imagine. Academically and professionally, I’ve always been fascinated with international business and have considered a career that involves travel and working with people from diverse backgrounds. I hope this trip fuels my passion and provides valuable insight into how global business operations work through experiencing it up close and in a different country.

I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me, and I am excited to keep blogging!!
