From the Steel City to Stroopwafels

About Me

Hello! My name is Brandon Mason, and I’ve just finished my first year at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. I have lived near Pittsburgh for my entire life, just around half an hour away in Bethel Park, PA. Along with a major in electrical engineering, I am pursuing a minor in German. I’m also a member of the Pitt Band’s trombone section, and I’d like to try to join the symphonic band for the coming Spring. On top of this, I plan on getting involved in the Robotics and Automation Society and Pitt’s co-op program in the Fall.

Aside from academics, I love cooking and baking (or, at least, attempting it), listening to jazz & funk music, watching hilariously bad horror movies, making memories with friends, and spending time outside, notably going on long walks and hiking. I am also passionate about innovation and sustainability, and would like to use my studies to focus on efficient energy and smart grid technologies in my professional career. I am considering pursuing Pitt’s nuclear engineering certificate to supplement this focus.

Plus3 Netherlands

I look forward to every opportunity that will be presented to me in the Netherlands. I am a bit nervous about traveling thousands of miles away, as this will be my first time ever leaving the country, but I am incredibly excited to experience what’s in store. On top of delving into the unknown, I am excited to experience a brand new culture, explore unique locations, visit sustainable companies, eat new, interesting foods, meet new people from Pitt and the Netherlands alike, and learn about Dutch history. I am also looking forward to developing professionally, specifically learning how to better create a personal network.

On top of the cultural experiences and tours, I am excited to experience the Plus3 program’s focus on sustainability throughout the trip. Because I’d like to implement sustainability into my work in the future, I am very interested to learn firsthand how sustainable systems and innovations are used in European countries. The Netherlands consistently ranks among the highest in global sustainability, which makes me even more excited to learn how such effective practices are achieved.
