Returning “Home”

Hello, my name is Braden Barber, and I’m currently a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh, pursuing a degree in Finance with a minor, or potentially a double major, in Computer Science. Career-wise, I am particularly interested in high finance, with aspirations to work in banking, specifically within restructuring or capital markets sectors. Eventually, I aim to transition into buy-side finance.

Outside of academics, hockey has played a significant role in my life—I was introduced to the sport practically from the moment I could walk. Coming from the Philadelphia region, I’m a dedicated fan of the Flyers (for better or worse), as well as the Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers. Beyond sports, music is another passion of mine; my taste ranges broadly from Frank Ocean and Drake to Led Zeppelin and Metallica. Additionally, I love exploring new places and trying diverse cuisines, as I view these experiences as opportunities for learning and personal growth.

This summer, I will be traveling with the Plus3 Program to Seoul, South Korea, and I am extremely excited. I chose this program primarily because of my cultural background—I am of Korean descent. I was born in Seoul and adopted at the age of five by my family in Pennsylvania. For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of reconnecting with my roots and returning to my homeland. The Pitt Plus3 Program has given me a meaningful opportunity to explore my cultural identity, and I look forward to making the most of this experience. Beyond personal growth, I’ve always been eager to see the world and immerse myself in different cultures. I believe that global exposure is a unique and powerful form of knowledge, and I hope to gain as much of it as I can.

While I don’t have rigid expectations for this trip, I approach it with curiosity, openness, and a strong desire to learn. Personally, I hope to immerse myself in the city’s day-to-day life and absorb as much of the culture as possible. Academically, I aim to gain insight into South Korean society and how it has shaped the country’s economic and technological growth. Professionally, I look forward to learning how businesses operate in Seoul and how they compare to those in the United States. I’m eager to expand my global perspective, build new relationships, and gain firsthand understanding of the cultural and strategic differences in business practice. This experience will not only connect me with my heritage but also broaden my worldview and professional outlook.
