Day 1: Ciudad de Flores

After a long travel day yesterday, we finally made it to Costa Rica! Today we explored Heredia, where we will be staying during our trip. We also visited the Central Market and spent time bonding together. I enjoyed learning the history of Heredia and experiencing the culture.

My first impression of Costa Rica was how beautiful it is. When I looked out the window on the plane, I thought to myself “Wow, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything this beautiful in my life!” As we rode on Don José’s (our bus driver) air conditioned bus to our homestays, I enjoyed seeing the life. The roads are always congested, there are no cross walks (you just walk), and most of the stores are similar to the ones in the US.

I found many things super interesting as we explored Heredia. To start, I noticed the deep gutters on the sides of the road. Costa Rica gets a lot of rain during the wet season, so these help get rid of the water off the road quickly. Also, as we walked thru the city I noticed how social everyone is. There were people everywhere. I noticed many people just sitting with their friends or family enjoying the warm breeze. It’s funny to think how similar our cultures can be because my family and I love sitting outside together. I also enjoyed visiting the market, where we tried many new fruits.

Costa Rica is a very welcoming country, and I am excited to see what else this trip brings!
