First Day in Costa Rica

As I ran through the streets of my small neighborhood early this morning, the first thing I noticed was I was out of shape! The mixture of high altitude and humidity really challenged me and made me realize I’m not in Pottstown anymore. As the day went on my perception of Costa Rica changed. The quality of the fresh fruit, coffee and food in general was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting to be overwhelmed with spice, but most of the spices added were very mild. I will definitely have to ask my mama tica (homestay mom) for some of her recipes to bring back home.

One of the most surprising aspects for me is how quiet it is here, even in a busy city. As we walked through the main part of the city, I was expecting cars honking, people yelling and speakers blaring, but instead we were met with the pleasant sounds of mass at the local church and live music in the town square. This tranquility may only be because it was Sunday and most shops were closed, but as the trip continues I will have to see.

The most challenging part for me has been the lack of Spanish skills I have. I had never taken Spanish before joining Duolingo a few days ago. It turns out my mama tica, who is a grandmother, speaks no English, so I have had to rely on my roommate to speak Spanish to communicate between all of us. If I continue to practice everyday and listen closely to what she is saying by the end of the trip I might be able to form a few sentences.

All in all, Costa Rica has been a pleasant surprise and a nice change of scenery.
