After a long 24 hours of travel, we have finally arrived in Cyprus! We are starting our trip in the city of Nicosia. This morning we went to the University of Nicosia and got a food presentation on local food culture in the country. I learned how traditional Cypriot cuisine is inspired by Byzantine, Italian, French and Greek foods. The dishes we tried were unlike what I have ever eaten before. My favorite was fried halloumi with tomato, cucumber and tzatziki on a piece of pita. Something that surprised me the most was how different the dessert was. Galaktopoureko was a jelly texture with syrup and dried fruit on top. It also was not very sweet. One of my favorite parts of exploring new cultures is definitely trying the new foods, which was a great way to start of my trip to Cyprus!
