On day 4, we took a bus from Augsburg to Regensburg. After a two-hour drive, we went on a tour at Continental, had some free time to walk around in Regensburg, and then toured the city hall. At Continental, I really appreciated that the lecture came before seeing the factory, even though they mentioned it was usually the other way around. This order effectively provided the necessary background knowledge to understand what I was observing in the factory. The magazines and circuit boards were particularly interesting to see up close, especially knowing their crucial role in operating the machines and technology I use daily, such as the computer circuit boards we saw, as well as larger machinery like televisions and major home appliances. We viewed a blueprint outlining the various rooms within the factory. Reflecting on the MAN tour, the factory at MAN felt much more open, allowing for easier movement between stations. Continental, in contrast, had narrower walkways between rows of large machines positioned closely together. MAN’s more open and free-flowing factory layout seems better suited for handling large equipment, which is moved by both humans and self-driving robots. Additionally, there appeared to be a greater reliance on manual labor at MAN compared to Continental. At Continental, the products being manufactured were much smaller, and there were fewer people in each room operating the machinery. Since the parts being moved at Continental were significantly smaller than at MAN, less space was needed between machines for their transportation.
Following our tour at Continental, we traveled into Regensburg, where we had the opportunity to stroll around, get some food and coffee, and visit the city hall. At the city hall, we learned about historical societal functions and the role the town hall played within them. For instance, we discovered that during decision-making processes, the town criers would wait in a separate room, unable to hear the discussions, until a resolution was reached that they could then announce from the balconies. We also saw torture devices used to elicit confessions and a ballroom used for dancing and socializing. Overall, it was a fantastic day, and we all fell asleep on the bus ride back!
