Day 5 – GlassEgg and Vietnamese Games

Today we went to tour GlassEgg which is a company that produces video games for a publisher. They specialize in creating the cars for CSR 2 and Forza MotorSport. Additionally, they created some of the buildings for Call of Duty and PubG. After hearing all about their company I can say that the main component of their success is how well they treat their employees. Each year they have a contest for who is the most dedicated worker and two employees will receive one month’s salary, better healthcare, and access to company trips for life. That sounds like a really good job to me and if I was a computer science major I would definitely want to work there! I was also amazed to learn that when they are making cars, they get the 3-D models right from the car manufacturer. The car manufacturers do this as a way to advertise their cars to people who play the game.

Despite this current success I have to imagine that artificial intelligence will definitely make it harder for GlassEgg and other video game producers around the world. That is because GlassEgg does not use AI to make its games. They simply use it as a reference point. They also committed to not cutting any of their staff. This is where I feel they might fall behind other companies in terms of profit margins because they take such good care of their employees. While in other companies they might replace staff with AI in order to save money.

After the company visit we had our last Vietnamese language class where we learned how to barter in Vietnamese. This was especially challenging because I kept forgetting what all of the different terms meant. I kept mixing up high and low. So when I meant to say too high of a price I was actually saying too low. Then we played a few Vietnamese games which were fun. One had you bounce a ball and pick up chopsticks which was especially challenging especially when the number of chopsticks I had to grab increased. We also played a Vietnamese gambling game where we gambled with candy. My luck was pretty good until the end of the game when my luck ran out and I lost everything! Overall, I learned a lot about GlassEgg, how to barter, and about some Vietnamese games!!
