A Day of Stones and Stories

To end of the weekend strong, we visited the beautiful Aphrodite’s Rock and then made our way to The Tombs of the Kings and finished our day off with a guided tour of the Mosiacs. When we first arrived at Aphrodite’s Rock, I completely underestimated how large it would be in person! Seeing the rock that Aphrodite was born from and the beautiful Mediterranean water and sea foam that she emerged from surrounding it was such a surreal experience. We learned that the weather can vary at this destination, some days it is more windy, some days it’s gray, and sometimes the sky and water are both clear. For us, it was a little bit windy. This was definitely one of my favorite sites we have seen so far! After visiting Aphrodite’s Rock, we took a quick stop to see The Tomb of the Kings. This site was so amazing, I have never seen anything like it. I learned that The Tomb of the Kings even holds numerous types of tombs, including single tombs, chamber tombs, and monumental tombs. This was so cool to me because this specific structure of tombs has no other parallel in the world, besides maybe one or two. Being able to step into these sophisticated tombs was so interesting because I never realized how large they actually were until it was so easy to fit multiple people! The tombs are so well preserved and the landscape they are on was amazing to me. After The Tomb of the Kings, we finished our day off with a guided tour of the Mosiacs. One of the Mosiacs that stuck out to me was the story about Phaedra and Hippolytus. This mosiac depicted a story about Phaedra, Theseus’s queen, falling in love with Hippolytus. Phaedra then ended up dying and Hippolytus married her sister, who then fell in love with her stepson. Phaedra also left Hippolytus a letter before she ending up dying, confessing her love and blaming her death on him. However, the truth did not come out until long after. This story was so intriguing to me and the mosiac behind it was so beautiful. I loved them all, but this one was definitely my favorite! I cannot believe another day is already over and we only have a few more left! Cyprus has been so amazing and I cannot wait for what is to come next.
