Today we had the amazing opportunity to take a tour around Recoleta and the Recoleta Cemetery. We were able to see amazing historical buildings all around the town. After seeing the views, we arrived at the cemetery. The cemetery contains around 4,800 vaults and mausoleums, which are house-like structures containing tombs and coffins within or under the building. The cemetery is built like a city. While walking through it, it felt like a town as all the mausoleums felt like houses all next to each other on narrower streets like pathways that felt like avenues. It had various rich families buried there and various important political figures like presidents and more. Evita, who we toured her house which is now a museum yesterday, is buried there. Her husband Jose Perón — former president of Argentina — is not buried there with her.
Jose Perón is one of the most important, and influential political figures in all of Argentine history. He made major advancements in Argentina’s healthcare system over his tenure. He built many hospitals and clinics within the city to increase accessibility for everyone within Argentina– specifically Buenos Aires. He brought up new ways of healthcare like free healthcare within the public sector. For the past two days we have been able to learn and understand more how Jose Perón played a huge role in molding Argentina’s healthcare system. Today, his efforts are going as strong as ever which clearly shows his legacy, and impact of Argentina.
