Day 8: The Ports of Limassol

Each of the four organizations we visited today CPA (Cyprus Ports Authority), DP World, P&O Maritime, and Eurogate offered an insightful look into how port infrastructure and logistics services support global supply chain operations. For CPA, we learned the different roles of CPA including providing commercial services, public functions, and acting as a regulator. CPA uses a Port Community System which supports electronic interaction between port operators and authorities. This demonstrates the vital role of information as one of the five drivers of supply chain management. By sharing real-time data with shipping lines, customs, logistics providers, and port operators, CPA improves responsiveness, coordination, and overall port efficiency. Our visit to DP World showcased how global terminal operators extend their reach by acquiring and managing multiple ports across regions. Through horizontal integration, DP World standardizes operations and shares best practices across terminals, improving container handling efficiency and service reliability across its network.

Then, our tours of P&O Maritime and Eurogate further emphasized the importance of coordination across the broader port ecosystem. At P&O Maritime, we learned how services like tugging, pilotage, and vessel maintenance support the reliability of maritime transport. These services may not directly handle cargo, but they are essential for ensuring transportation functions smoothly and safely, a key element of supply chain reliability. Eurogate showcased a high-volume container terminal where yard space, crane operations, and scheduling are tightly managed to balance efficiency and responsiveness. Their role directly supports the inventory and production drivers, ensuring containers are stored, moved, and transferred with minimal delay. Altogether, today’s visits showed how each organization, whether regulatory, operational, or supportive, contributes to the five drivers supply chain management: production, inventory, location, transportation, and information.
