Watch your step

Today, we returned to Sarapiquí to visit a banana plantation. The plantation was beautiful, and our guide, Francini, was incredibly knowledgeable. Her young daughter, Victoria, kept us entertained with her playful energy and charm.

At the plantation, we learned how bananas grow from a flower, and how the petals protect the developing fruit. We also discovered the importance of watching where we step, fire ants are a real threat if you’re not careful!

Doing business in Costa Rica can be challenging due to several barriers to entry, starting with the climate. Although the weather is consistently warm, the rainy season can bring such intense downpours that crops are damaged or become susceptible to mold. Another obstacle is the complexity of cross-country economic partnerships. The value of the colón can fluctuate, while the U.S. dollar remains more stable, making transactions harder to predict.

In the tourism sector, high operating costs, unpredictable weather, and a heavy reliance on eco-tourism can limit the types of attractions the country can develop. These factors create a narrow but highly specialized niche that not all ventures can easily enter.

The community supports people like Francini by investing their time and labor in the plantation. Local markets, brand loyalty, and word-of-mouth recommendations play a major role in helping her sell her products and sustain her business. Positive reviews and community support are essential for growth and long-term success.

We saw many different crops today, each grown and harvested in unique ways. Bananas produce a single large bunch per cycle, which is harvested all at once. Peppercorn is handpicked as the berries mature, often requiring multiple rounds of harvesting. Cacao pods are cut from the tree with a curved knife, then opened manually so the seeds can be scooped out. It’s fascinating to see how different these crops are, yet they all thrive on the same land!

Today was incredibly informative, and I’m so excited for the chocolate tour tomorrow!
