Today was a super exciting part of our visit here to Brimingham as we were actually able to visit one of their healthcare facilities.. We had the opportunity to go to the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and learn firsthand about the realities of working in mental health care in the UK. The day began with a series of presentations from several of the trust’s clinical educators, each sharing their journey into mental health nursing. It was inspiring to hear how diverse their paths were. Some of them knew early on that they wanted to work in mental health, while others transitioned into it from other areas of nursing or even different careers entirely.
The educators also gave us a deep dive into what a typical day looks like for a mental health nurse. The general consesnsu was that no two days are ever the same! From conducting assessments and administering medication to supporting families and coordinating care, their roles are incredibly dynamic and centered around empathy, patience, and resilience. We also learned more about the trust itself and the wide range of services it offers. This includes specialist facilities such as deaf services, mother and baby units, eating disorder treatment centers, and forensic mental health care. It was great to hear how comprehensive and inclusive their approach is, with services tailored to meet very specific needs in the community.
After the presentations, we visited another one of the trust’s facilities just down the roadand grabbed lunch at the cafeteria in the hospital it’s connected to. Post-lunch, we were able to interact directly with some of the staff at the facility, including both administrative professionals and nurses. They were incredibly open and generous with their time, sharing about their journeys into mental health nursing and answering our many questions about their experience in the job. Then came one of the most impactful parts of the day, we were actually able to tour of one of the inpatient wards.
My group visited a men’s ward that specializes in supporting service users living with dementia. Walking through the ward, I was struck by the careful design of the space, one of the nurses giving our tour actually had a big role in designing the place. Tt was calm, structured, and filled with various rooms and objects to support the needs of the service users. We saw firsthand some of the support systems in place, including therapeutic activities, individualized care plans, and multi-disciplinary teamwork. It was such a privilege to witness the difficult, compassionate, and clearly person-centered care these professionals provide every day.
We ended the day by coming together as a group to reflect and share thoughts. A big part of the discussion focused on the similarities and differences between mental healthcare in the US and UK. It is always interesting to hear how approaches to certain situations differ between the two countries and how even though we can be very different, we still have many similarities in how we provide care.
To top it all off, we wrapped up the day with some well-earned shopping and delicious food, it was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on everything we’d learned. Now it is just time to pack up and get ready to travel to London tomorrow!
