Day 9: Cement, Churches, and Cats

Today, we started off by visiting Vassiliko Cement company, founded in 1963, they own 310 factories in 33 countries and produce 25 million tons of concrete per year. Vassiliko Cement Company can be fairly said to operate as a vertically integrated firm by controlling multiple stages of its production and distribution process from raw material extraction to final product delivery. During our visit, we saw how the company manages its own quarry operations to source limestone, clay, and gypsum, key inputs in cement production, which allows it to reduce dependency on external suppliers and ensure consistent quality. By overseeing both the sourcing of raw materials and the manufacturing process within the same facility, Vassiliko strengthens its control over costs, supply chain reliability, and overall product quality. For the latter part of the day, we visited the St. Lazarus Church and Hala Sultan Tekke. At Hala Sultan Tekke, there were probably the most cats I’ve seen in one place so far at Cyprus. There were even kittens as well and we got some great pictures.
