This morning we visited Vassiliko Cement Works, the largest production unit in Europe. They operate as a vertically integrated company, managing the entire cement production process from raw material extraction to final distribution. The company owns and operates five quarries (two limestone, two clay, and one gypsum). Owning their own quarries ensures that their supply stays consistent and exclusive to just their company. These materials such as limestone, clay, clinker and cement are all processed in their own facility. This allows for an annual production capacity of up to 2.4 million tons. In addition, Vassiliko Cement Works owns and operates its own port which facilitates the import of raw materials (coal, petcoke, alternate fuels and white cement) and export of cement and clinker. This port serves approximately 300 ships per year. At the end we got a tour of site and they gave use orange vests and hard hats to wear. That was definitely the highlight of my experience there!!
