This morning we visited two different shipping related companies, Bernhardt Shulte and the Columbia Group. Bernhardt Shulte serves mainly as a training institute for seafarer workers to use ultra realistic 3D simulators as well as computers, as well as training areas for people like the head chef to practice cooking in a galley. As a seafarer you have to take safety into consideration first as any small disruption can have a large impact. Some of the areas we saw were the control room, bridge, mess hall, and galley within the training center. The Columbia Group is am very large multi national organization that owns businesses in the shipping, technology, logistics, and leisure industries. We learned more about ship management, since they manage over 400 vessels as well as provide data to third parties. They have to keep into account how much time each vessel is ahead or behind on their journey through tracking, while also taking into consideration fuel consumption. Additionally, geopolitical factors can disrupt shipping routes and cause problem areas that have to be changed or more carefully monitored. There is a complex web of data flowing 24/7 to make sure the vessels arrive safely at their destinations through both their ship management company and the cooperation of the ship and local ports.
