Bilbao – Day 4

Today we started off by taking the metro and bus to a hospital in Gorliz. This hospital was originally used for only pediatrics, and was therefore in a great location with a great view. Almost every room in the hospital faced a beautiful beach with gorgeous cliffs in the background (pictured). We got a chance to see the Orika- Balance (pictured) that we learned about yesterday in person and in action. We also got to see multiple different rehab machines to help hospital patients walk. One of which was an exoskeleton looking device that was over $900,000. This was my favorite device to see as it was wrapped around the person’s body and was capable of making them walk or walk better.

Next, we walked around the pediatric side of the hospital and the pharmaceutical room. We got to see how they used very specific simulations and technology to help patients. One of these was a TV that used sensors to allow the patient to play games that encouraged movement in very specific ways. This allowed for children to stay interested by playing a game without realizing they are doing their therapy. They also had a pool for therapy and helping patients to walk better. This unfortunately was out of commission until they could remodel. Overall, a very cool experience with a lot to learn and a beautiful view.
