As I reflect on the past two weeks, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this incredible journey through Costa Rica. This trip has been so much more than just an educational experience—it’s been a chance to connect deeply with the people, the land, and the culture that make this country so vibrant. I’m especially thankful for the warmth and generosity of the Costa Rican community, who welcomed us with open arms and shared their stories, traditions, and daily lives with honesty and pride. Whether we were hiking through lush farms, listening to farmers explain their work, or sharing meals with local families, every moment was a reminder of the strong sense of community and the respect they have for the environment. This trip has truly opened my eyes and heart, and I’ll carry these experiences and relationships with me long after I return home.
1. Farm
Visiting farms in Costa Rica gave me a new appreciation for the incredible amount of labor and planning required to grow tropical crops efficiently. From the layout of banana plantations to the shade-grown coffee fields in the mountains, it’s clear that efficiency starts with the land itself. Farmers use carefully timed irrigation, composting, and crop rotation to maximize yield while preserving the environment. I was surprised to learn how efficiency isn’t just about speed but also about sustainability—planting the right tree at the right time in the right place. This has made me see my morning coffee or pineapple snack not just as food, but as the result of thoughtful, efficient systems rooted in deep respect for the earth.
2. Processing Mills and Exporters
At the processing stage, efficiency becomes even more crucial, especially for coffee and bananas. I was struck by the precision and speed of the coffee washing and drying process, and how automation is being introduced to sort beans more quickly without compromising quality. For bananas, timing is everything—if they’re not boxed and shipped on schedule, the whole shipment can spoil. Seeing these processes made me realize how fragile the supply chain is and how much relies on careful coordination. It also made me reflect on how behind-the-scenes logistics impact the prices we pay and the quality we expect as consumers.
3. Coffee Roasters and Retail Stores/Cafes
Roasters and cafes serve as the bridge between producers and consumers, and their efficiency affects both sides of the equation. Whether it’s a café that sources directly from a farm or a roaster optimizing roast profiles for consistency, efficiency here means maintaining quality while scaling operations. I learned how some cafés invest in barista training and inventory systems to reduce waste and speed up service without cutting corners. This experience made me appreciate the story behind every cup—not just how it tastes, but the smart decisions that brought it from bean to brew.
4. Customers
Finally, the role of the customer in the supply chain showed me how demand shapes everything upstream. Efficient communication of values—like fair trade or organic certification—helps customers make informed decisions, which in turn supports more sustainable and productive farms. I realized I play a role in this system; by supporting brands that prioritize ethical sourcing and efficient practices, I help reinforce those values. This trip has changed my relationship with tropical agriculture. I now see coffee, bananas, and chocolate not just as everyday items, but as the products of a global system that depends on both human effort and smart planning.
