Hi, my name is Sophia! I am currently a first-year engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. I intend to major in Industrial Engineering and complete a certificate in Data Analytics. During my studies, I also plan to participate in Co-Op to expand my knowledge of the various applications of Industrial Engineering! Here at Pitt, I am in the Frederick Honors College Degree program, the Society of Women Engineers, the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Ballet Club, and Sewing Club. Each of these supplementary aspects of my experience at Pitt has provided numerous opportunities for professional, social, and academic growth. This includes volunteering at SWE’s Elementary Engineering Days, attending FHC guest speaker lectures, and performing in full-length ballet productions.

While not in school, I live with my parents, two brothers, and my dog Clover. I love going to the beach, dancing, baking, and sewing. I also stay active by going to yoga classes each week with my friends. Over the summers, I work at a bakery where I bake and decorate desserts and pastries. Through this experience, I have learned firsthand about managing inventory and coordinating work schedules, which has enhanced my organizational and problem-solving abilities.

This spring, I will be participating in the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Plus3 program in the Netherlands. As an aspiring IE, my primary goals will be to optimize and improve existing systems. After being exposed to diverse systems in the Netherlands, including their water management, circular economy, and windmill usage, I will have a better understanding of how to implement sustainable solutions in my future career. With my background in the food industry, I am particularly excited about our company visit to Cacao & Spice, a small craft chocolate company that prides itself on its sustainable cacao innovation through reforestation and direct trade.

While in the Netherlands, I am looking forward to immersing myself in a new culture and continuing to develop awareness of the people around me. I am also excited to build relationships with my peers during this experience!
