Preparing for the Netherlands

Hi, my name is Hayleigh Klan, and I am a first-year Civil Engineering student going on the Netherlands trip! I love to crochet, draw, and paint, but I am also learning how to knit and play the electric guitar. I am currently in the symphonic band here at Pitt and I previously did the marching band. Although they take up a lot of time, they are so fun, and I recommend them to anyone who has played an instrument!

I chose engineering because I love to design, solve problems, and do stem courses. I was most interested in civil engineering because I knew I loved design the most. I took many art classes in high school, and being able to apply that to stuctures that people could drive by started to become my dream. As of lately, I have become even more interested in the environmental aspect of civil engineering. Solving environmental problems with structural designs is something I would look forward to.

I have chosen this Plus3 program because I was very interested in learning more about sustainability. I thought the principles of it would inspire me to focus more towards the environmental and social aspects of engineering. During our pre-travel assignments, I found the topics so interesting that I decided to enroll in the sustainability certificate. I am so excited to learn more throughout the trip especielly knowing I can apply it through the rest of college and my career.
